The BMW M3 CS Handschalter: A Tribute to the Sixth-Generation M3 in Its Purest Form

The BMW M3 has always represented one of the purest expressions of performance driving, and now BMW M is closing out the sixth-generation M3 with a car built squarely for enthusiasts. Meet the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter — a limited-production model that combines the lightweight engineering and track-focused dynamics of BMW’s CS models with one increasingly rare ingredient: a 6-speed manual transmission.

At a time when high-performance cars continue moving toward electrification and automation, the M3 CS Handschalter feels deliberately focused on driver involvement. Power comes from BMW M’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, producing 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, paired exclusively with rear-wheel drive and a precise manual gearbox. The result is a car that prioritizes connection and engagement as much as outright speed.

Like every great CS model before it, lightweight construction plays a major role in shaping the experience. BMW M has extensively used carbon fibre reinforced plastic throughout the car, including the roof, hood, front splitter, diffuser, spoiler, and interior trim. Forged wheels, a titanium exhaust system, and available carbon ceramic brakes help reduce weight even further, while standard M Carbon Bucket Seats reinforce the car’s motorsport-focused character.

BMW M has also thoroughly reworked the chassis for sharper responses and greater precision. A 6 mm lower ride height, model-specific suspension tuning, revised steering calibration, and components derived from the M4 CSL help give the Handschalter its planted and confidence-inspiring feel on both road and track. Drivers can also choose between high-performance, track-oriented, or optional ultra-track tires depending on how they plan to use the car.

Visually, the M3 CS Handschalter stays true to BMW CS tradition with exposed carbon fibre details, yellow GT-inspired daytime running lights, and exclusive finishes including Imola Red II and Techno Violet Metallic — colours deeply rooted in M3 history. Inside, heated M Carbon Bucket Seats, an Alcantara steering wheel, and standard M Drive Pro complete a cabin that feels equally capable during daily driving or a weekend at the circuit.

Only 40 examples are planned for the Canadian market, with production beginning in July and deliveries expected later this fall. More than just another special edition, the M3 CS Handschalter feels like a celebration of everything enthusiasts love about the M3: balance, precision, and the simple satisfaction of shifting gears yourself.
