The fourth generation of the BMW X5 impresses with its wealth of innovations and represents the most compelling embodiment yet of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) blueprint: the ability to venture off road combined with a talent for dynamic driving pleasure on it. The 2019 X5 retains the family resemblance of its forebears while sending out “it’s most powerful message yet in terms of presence and modernity. It defines a new X design language — robust, clear and precise.

Slightly larger than before in terms of wheelbase, width, and length, the new X5's proportions are eminently familiar, even if its kidney grille has grown to near-comical proportions. Its skin is pulled tauter over the corners and the side surfacing adds a bit of interest with a line that kicks up at the rear door, making it look more athletic, but it's far from revolutionary.

Interior

The new model’s interior makes the outgoing car look like the oldie that it is, with a new 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that boasts an up-to-the-minute graphic presentation, along with a similarly sized digital instrument cluster as standard. Gesture control comes to the X5 as an option alongside the standard iDrive clickwheel. A sunroof is standard, with a panoramic unit optional. That the gear lever, iDrive controller, volume knob, and stop/start button can be optioned in glass affords further opportunity to up the glitz factor. The standard ambient lighting takes a cue from nightclubs, with BMW boasting that it “emits pulsating light signals” in response to various stimuli, including a door opening or an incoming phone call.

Technology

Perfectly connected, authoritatively ahead. The BMW X5 has the latest generation of BMW connectivity technologies. Intelligent digital services and driver assistance systems create a seamless connection with the outside world and offer you maximum comfort and the greatest possible safety thanks to intuitive operation. Standard driver-assist and active-safety features include blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automated emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-collision warning, and speed-limit recognition. Automated parking is available, and a more capable Driving Assistant Professional package includes upgraded adaptive cruise control that allows for automatic lane-change capability and more hands-free steering than before.

Together with the superior traction of the xDrive all-wheel drive, the refined BMW TwinPower Turbo engine provides an output that promises sheer driving pleasure at the highest level. The 6-cylinder petrol engine develops a full 340 hp, with the fuel being injected into the cylinders at up to 350 bar for even more efficient combustion. Pressure that the BMW X5 confidently translates into top performance.
